National Latin Exam Awards and Honors
Angelus Academy is well known for its Latin program, which offers a rigorous introduction to this beautiful language. Angelus students have earned high honors in the National Latin Exam and have gone on to excel in high school Latin courses.
The National Latin Exam is sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. The philosophy of the National Latin Exam is predicated on providing every Latin student the opportunity to experience a sense of personal accomplishment and success in his or her study of the Latin language and culture. This opportunity exists for all students since, in the National Latin Exam, they are not competing with their fellow students on a comparative basis, but are evaluated solely on their own performance on the exam. On the Introduction to Latin and Latin I exams, which Angelus Academy seventh and eighth graders take, there are questions on grammar, comprehension, mythology, derivatives, literature, Roman life, history, geography, oral Latin, and Latin in use in the modern world. Each exam is a 40-question, multiple-choice test with a time limit of 45 minutes.
Angelus Academy seventh graders take the “Introduction to Latin” exam. At this level, achievement certificates are awarded to students scoring in the top 50th percentile. This year’s Achievement award winners were Abby Butkovich, Grace Hanna, and Mariah Lash. Certificates of Outstanding Achievement were awarded to students scoring in the top 75th percentile. This year’s Outstanding Achievement Award winners were Alexis Borbidge, Maria Hurley, Sebastian Lyons, and Tim O’Connell.
